As one of themost respectedmasters of Chinese painting in the 20th century, Zhang is now the biggest selling artist at auction. Last year alone his work generated US$354.8 million in auction sales – US$31 million more than Picasso who weighed in at number two according to the French database Artprice . Zhang created over 30,000 pieces of art during his life. Having originally learned from the works of ancient Chinese painters before later journeying to Mogao Caves to examine and emulate the ancient murals in Dunhuang, the diversity of painting styles he learned and practiced through his studies has practically summed up the history of Chinese painting since the 5th century.
