In his early years, Zhang focused on ink wash painting from the Ming and Qing dynasties and was hired as an art professor by the National Central University at 34. However, wanting to explore the artistic roots of Chinese painting, in 1941 he traveled to Dunhuang in Ganzu province for two years to study the ancient murals in over 300 Mogao Caves. Zhang’s trip toDunhuang proved to be a pivotal experience in his artistic life and laid the foundations of his masterly attainment. Upon his return, his painting skills and sensitivity transcended beyond the frame of traditional art, whichmarked a significant change in his style of artistic expression – Zhang had successfully departed from a painting style marked by a continuum of traditional techniques and sensibilities to one with a confluence of the influences he gathered.
