High Life

品 34 #11 2017 年 8 月 “When Zhang stayed in Macau in 1949, the surroundings of Sé Catedral, Senado Square, Pou Chai Temple, the longgone Riviera Hotel and the waterfront of Praia Grande were the places where he went to dine, gather with artistic friends, display paintings and draw from life,” Mr Chan says. “Undoubtedly, Zhang found in Macau the energies to fuel his artistic creativity and his brief presence is still unforgettable, a memorable part of the city.” As Mr Chan explains, Dunhuang wasn’t discovered until 1900. To that point, people only knew the history of the Silk Road through written records. “From the copies of those cave paintings, the viewer can vividly see the evolution of Chinese society and the inheritance of history and culture,” he says. “And if you are learning painting, you can see howZhang Daqian’s early work involves tradition and then gradually came out from that tradition. You can also see from these works how hard Zhang worked. In fact, in this exhibition there are lots of things to be explored.”
