High Life

High Life had the privilege of interviewing the critically acclaimed violinist Jing Wang, concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, who shared with us his musical journey and insights into the role. F ounded in 1947 as the Sino- British Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) adopted its current name in 1957 and went fully professional in 1974. With the unequivocal vision of “inspiring through the finest music- making,” HK Phil typically presents around 150 concerts over a 44-week season, attracting some 200,000 concertgoers annually. One of the foremost Chinese violinists of his generation, Wang became HK Phil’s concertmaster in the 2013/14 season. His musical story has been one of a child prodigy who excelled at every critical juncture life presented. “When I was three years old,” he recalled, “a cousin one year my senior began playing the violin. I was instantly captivated, but he would not let me touch, let alone play, his precious instrument. I played with a pair of chopsticks instead and such was the beginning of my musical journey.” PLAY
