HIGH LIFE 117 Upon completing her postgraduate studies on scholarship at the University of Southern California, she successively played in the Los Angeles YouthOrchestra, the LosAngeles Ballet Orchestra and the SanDiego Symphony during her 12 years in the United States, before taking the Principal Cello seat with the Macao Orchestra and now in the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra. “The orchestra is only as strong as its conductor. An outstanding conductor gives musicians new freedom and possibilities with the same score. In one way or another, the orchestra is one giant instrument with which the conductor expresses themselves musically.” Sophie Chen During her years abroad, Shenzhen has made unprecedented progress in its classical music scene. “Almost every school now has its own orchestra taught by musicians”, she observed, “and avid students are soaking up music like a sponge.” Indeed, the level of enthusiasm is such that tickets are often sold out well in advance. True to the Shenzhen spirit, the orchestra is always active and ambitious in seeking new connections. International touring is a staple: the orchestra has in recent years twice given Chinese New Year concerts at the prestigious John F.
