46 品 Asked about his inspirations, Lai explains, “I see my work as a record of a single moment of time. Time has no physical substance – it continues without beginning or end. We know it exists by the marks left on our surroundings. “No man-made objects can escape this marking of time and the tiles are merely objects I use to reflect on how time exists in cities. Some are broken, some pale and some moss-grown, all because of time. “The process of painting each single tile is also the process of me experiencing time. Later, by placing them and their respective fragments of time together, I create a time space of its own.”
