In 2016, Vhils presented his first solo exhibition “Debris” in Hong Kong. After a year spent conducting research and exploration, Vhils brought this travelling solo exhibition to Macau as the second stop of its tour. “What I usually do is portraits of people, but then I use materials that the city expires to work on them,” he explains while walking us to a room where he has installed portraits of individuals carved into discarded doors found via recycling companies. “What I wanted to do with this show is to do half in Hong Kong and the other half inMacau, making the two realities and the two cities mix, in a way, in the show – both in materials and people that live in the same city. Thatwas thewhole idea. “The show will go to other cities and then one door will go out and one door from that city will replace it. In the end you’ll have a collection on different cities, with different people, and make reflections.”
