品 12 #11 2017 年 8 月 From the editor For the common good I n everyday life, it is easy to be overwhelmed by triviality and forget our ideals and goals when trying to survive on the basic needs of feeding ourselves, sleeping enough and having a decent place to stay. The world is an incredibly tough place and with artificial intelligence taking over jobs more often in the future, we need to start thinking about a different approach when competing in an everchanging world. Robots, computers and machines might be able to store knowledge and perform tasks, but they do not have wisdom and emotion. In recent years, scientists specializing in the stud- ies of human evolution found evidence that early humans de- veloped compassion before intelligence. Apparently, sympathy played a huge role in helping early humans overcome genetic and life challenges. In pursuit of success, perhaps the best method is to devel- op concepts to help others solve problems or better their lives. If humans onlyworry about the amount ofmoneywemake and disregard any positive impact we can have on others, then we are not contributing meaningfully to society. Financial wealth usually goes to those with an awareness of the common good, people who work on projects they are passionate about without a big emphasis on money. When one focuses on making a difference in the world – big or small as it might be – and treats income as a byproduct, that is a work of compassion and as human evolution has shown, it is an ele- ment that will move humanity forward. Most importantly, hav- ing emotion from the heart that fuels progress and creationwill give someone a competitive edge over artificial intelligence.
