High Life
F ilipe Miguel Das Dores is an artist born and bred in Macau. He also happens to be Macanese, speaking three languages fluently which lends him that exotic touch. Tall and shy, Filipe welcomes us with a timid smile before showing us around his solo exhibition at the Old Ladies House (Albergue) titled Nocturne . The first feature of Filipe’s work to catch the eye is his elegantplayof lightanddarkusingwatercolors.Thedominant hues are black, grey, ochre and red and the depictions take us back to our childhood. Filipe smiles when I mention this. “People always ask why my paintings focus on the old side of Macau,” he explains. “It is not that I don’t like the new, but I paint from memory and in my memory I always revisit places from my childhood.”
