Q uietly opened early this year in a two-floor building in Beishan village – one of the last surviving historical villages in Zhuhai – Feiyi Art Space is dedicated to promoting African art and culture in all its forms in China. For over 100 years African art has influenced Western artists, however despite rising interest in contemporary African art in mature art markets around the world it still remains a largely unknown entity in these parts. Sahr Johnny, the founder and chief curator of Feiyi who was born in London to a Sierra Leonean family and has been living in China for 27 years, decided to step out and undertake this mission to curate, exhibit and promote the diversity and uniqueness of African art in China.
