P recisely a century since its première in Stuttgart, Germany, Alexander Zemlinsky’s Eine florentinische Tragödie, Op. 16 received its Asian première at the Macao Orchestra’s 2016- 17 Season Closing Concert. Bolstered by well over a dozen guest musicians from the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, the orchestra alongside three opera singers delivered a convincing interpretation of the multi-layered and yet little- known piece, in the form of a concert opera. Despite his dramatic fall from grace, the legacy of the Anglo-Irish author, playwright and poet Oscar Wilde lives on. Ingenious, prolific and rebellious, Wilde was to 19th century Victorian literature whatWolfgang Amadeus Mozart was to 18th century classical music. Since the turn of the 20th century, numerous operas have been created on the basis of Wilde’s works, including Salome, Op. 54 by Richard Strauss, Eine florentinische Tragödie, Op. 16 and Der Zwerg, Op. 17 by Alexander Zemlinsky, and Maddalena by Sergei Prokofiev.
