The mise-en-scène was sumptuous yet loyal to the historical period; a tendentious regisseur couldhave gone for a controversial setting such as the Cultural Revolution. Equally praiseworthy are the 60 unsung heroes in the orchestra pit, conducted by maestro Marco Guidarini. As revealed by some musicians from the Macao Orchestra, the collective performance of certain passages was trulyworld-class. Andrea Chénier is an Italian verismo opera in the French grand opera style, or French political history recounted with a lyrical Italian accent. For those who are well-versed in the Revolution, the performance was entertainment with substance, akin to a documentary film transcribed as an opera; for those who are yet to embark on the essential journey, it was enlightenment with style.
