This remains the majority view, uncontested by the composer inter vivos. Alternatively, despite sheer anachronism, one could read it as his struggles against the Nazi regime in protecting his Jewish daughter-in- law and grandchildren. During the performance, however, the author’s immediate impression was one of a WWI-era general’s post-retirement mémoire. What unites all three readings is the Nietzschean notion of struggle between a man’s internal cosmos and external world. Under the baton of the Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons, born in Riga in 1978, Vienna Philharmonic delivered a technically impeccable, musically compelling and intensely emotive interpretation of a richly textured piece. The violin solo part was particularly lyrical, living up to the axiom that every musician of Vienna Philharmonic, at their best, is good enough to be a soloist. Founded in 1842 and calling the resplendent Musikverein its home, Vienna Philharmonic has never relinquished its status as one of the world’s top three orchestras, rivalled only by Berlin Philharmonic and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The extraordinary 1942, 1944 and 1959 recordings of Ein Heldenleben by Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic and Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Willem Mengelberg, Richard Strauss and Herbert von Karajan respectively still exist today. Vienna Philharmonic performed two well-known waltzes as encores, each followed by thunderous applause, and the atmosphere was akin to the New Year’s Concert. Standing ovations at curtain call does not occur often, but it did, perhaps more for the encores than the intense Ein Heldenleben. It has been a scintillating autumn in the Pearl River Delta, with Vienna Philharmonic performing in Shenzhen and Macau, and Berlin Philharmonic in Hong Kong.
