品 14 #15 2017 年 12 月 From the editor Tools for happiness I have long been a fan of Buddhist meditation master and teacher Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, who I followed on YouTube before I met him in person recently during a trip to Hong Kong. In Rinpoche’s presence, it is easy to understand what the world-leading neuroscientist Richard Davidson meanswhenhe saysmeditationpractitioners have a positively “infectious” personality. Not only does Rinpoche have perfect posture and a radiant smile, his great sense of humor and love of storytelling helps laymen grasp complicated Buddhist philosophical concepts effortlessly. Perhaps this is what the Buddhist teacher refers to as “wisdom.” Rather than presenting his teachings as strictly reli- gious thoughts, Rinpoche shares his “wisdom” with individu- als of all faiths. It is as if he is offering precious tools for us to achieve true happiness and deal with adversity in life. One of these tools is meditation. In the 21st century, con- templative practices are scientifically proven to be beneficial for both themind and the body. As Rinpochewrote in his book The Joy of Living , “A disciplined mind invites true happiness.” As neuroscience reveals, we can train our mind to be strong in the same waywe train our muscles at the gym. If this is the case, human beings have a choice between happiness and suffering. The opportunity to be happy is always available.
