HIGH LIFE 43 Apart from focusing on herself, in 2013 Candy started a project relating to Macau the city, called OFF|SITE. It’s a site- specific performance project with performances closely bound to chosen spots in the old areas of Macau. OFF|SITE tries to offer another way to look at the city we live in, using dance to establish a dialogue with the city so that its people don’t forget the past or ignore parts of its present. “Before I did OFF|SITE, I was not veryfamiliarwith the cityeven though I was born here,” Candy explains. “But each year I did it I began to realize what the city is like. I really feel that I’m a citizen here now. And I’m not just doing this project for myself, I’m hoping to get more people’s attention focused on our city.” Next year, Candy plans to re-organize all the material and experience accumulated through the years to bring OFF|SITE inside to a documentary theater. “I feel it's a pity if we only do it once after all that effort,” she says. Candy also gained some new insights into her career after her series of dance projects. “When I started dancing, I was doing very traditional ballet, so I used to admire dancers who worked for big dance troupes– they looksobeautiful,” she offers. “But now, after dancing for somanyyears, I have started to rethink what constitutes beauty. “I feel now that dancing is not just about expressing beauty, or being cool, but about how to use gestures to saywhat I want to express. My body is my tool and mymedium.”
