Now headquartered in the 17th century baroque Palais Augarten in Leopoldstadt, Vienna, the Vienna Boys Choir has throughout its history maintained a thoroughly international outlook. At inception, the choir consisted of but a singing master, two basses and six boys. The Choir is in fact the last boys choir to be founded during themedieval period, preceded by the likes of the Aachen Cathedral Choir in 796; the Regensburg Cathedral Choir in 975, conducted for three decades by Monsignor Georg Ratzinger, elder brother of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI; and the St Florian Monastery Boys Choir in 1071.
