High Life
16 品 From the editor Beauty and imagination G rowing up in the 1990s, I was a huge fan of Wong Kar- wai’s movies. Wong has a certain aesthetic that he is known for and scenes in his movies are extremely expressive, even though the actors and actresses might not be speaking much. For this October issue of High Life , we had the opportunity to talk with Wing Shya, one of the most talented artists in Hong Kong and the man responsible for taking photos for Wong Kar-wai’s films. Even though Shya is humble and claims that he often makes mistakes as a photographer, his eye for beauty and unique perspective on all aspects of life, including the dark topic of suicide, enables him to create exciting art that stirs our imagination and opens our mind to new ideas about the positive and negative issues of our generation. Shya himself is an unpretentious soul that considers work as play and never takes himself too seriously. This playfulness is evident in the design of his CD packaging for artists such as FayeWong more than two decades ago, where he would use tape to hold the CD onto a paper card, something I have never seen anyone else do. In 2018, Shya’s devil-may-care attitude still remains and makes him stand out among the crowd in Hong Kong. After spending an afternoonwith him and getting to know him, we think he is now an even better version of himself.
