High Life

R ight from the start, it’s clear that Ian Lam is a very spontaneous person. When we first met at a restaurant launch last December, this young and easy going local was at the time moving from table to table promoting the venue’s latest Christmas art installment, which was a giant snow globe – far from the reality of Macau’s climate. This was when we learned that Lam’s family business revolves around the art industry. Ten months later we meet at Cinematheque Passion in downtown Macau to talk about his new documentary film, What’s Your Art , a very personal project based on the realities of life in Macau, and without any snow this time. “Since we last spoke, I lost all my phone contacts because I was pushed into the pool at a party,” he laughs. “But other than that, I just finished a business meeting with some important people which is why I am more dapper than normal right now. Business as usual!” It is clear that while Lam prioritizes his passion for the family business, he also enjoys life’s small pleasures. His own career has also taken off in recent years and he managed to bag some prizes at the recently concluded Canada-China International Film Festival.
