The man, the architect and the artist are intrinsically built on the experience of being from this diverse city. “Macauwas always an international city, a city of contacts, of different cultures despite being small,” he says. “That stayed with me when I travelled – first to Portugal, then Europe – to study. The notion of globalization was always very clear to me, we had experienced it in Macau from early on.” Marreiros has no discernible age, rather, the word that comes to mind is “cool.” Confident and cool. With an elegant, discretely monogramed shirt of blue-grey and a bold, brown leather sports jacket, the ensemble is completed by perfectly round, mirrored sunglasses. Marreiros has given much to the city. Innovation is perhaps the word that best describes him. From his buildings to his interior designs and even his persona, he isn’t afraid to be boldwithout ever losing his touch of elegance. When asked what specifically Macau contributed to his sense of aesthetics, he has little doubt. “Everyone says – and I feel it too – that mywork, be it in architecture or fine arts, is clearly western in its expression, however there are Portuguese and Chinese influences,” he explains. “The colors … even back in university I would use a pallet of colors that is very different from the one in Portugal, even Europe.
