High Life Issue #4
HIGH LIFE #4 January 2017 35 T all, confident and charming are the words that best describe Konstantin Bessmertny, Macau’s most prominent artist. His latest exhibition at the Macau Museum of Art (MAM) is called Ad Lib and for good reason. The expression, used mostly in classical music or drama, is Latin for “free will” or “at leisure” and indicates the spirit in which the artist represents or interprets a specific piece. Divided into separate sections, Ad Lib showcases different collections by Konstantin, who grew up in the Soviet Union. Now 52 and having spent over two decades in Macau, the artist believes that his formal education in Fine Arts was crucial to his training. “It is fine to put the rules you learned with your teachers aside, but only once you have learned them,” Konstantin explains as we pass a beautiful Cello over which he has scrawled Metallica lyrics.
