But playing with your children is something else.” As for Lily, she insists that she has never felt any great pressure from carrying the family legacy. “Honestly, I never felt that way,” she smiles. “Playing an instrument is always difficult as a child because you need to reallywant it – it takes a lot of dedication. But I never felt that extra weight, for me it was just natural.” It seems the same can be said about this father- daughter duo. “We seldom have disagreements about interpretation,” Lily explains. During their recent performance at the Macau Cultural Center, a full house applauded the talented duo as if it were a rock concert. With a mix of romantic and contemporary music and names as varied as Fauré, Debussy and Piazolla, it highlighted the power a good interpretation can have on an original piece. “In my view, there are different levels of communication between the artist and the public,”Maisky says. “The first and most obvious is the playing ability. Most trained musicians have this and it has to do with technique. The second level is the intellectual ability. Quite a few musicians have this and it is the ability to convey the understanding of what he or she is playing. “Finally – and only a few reach this level – is the emotional element. These are the real artists, they manage to touch the heart of whomever is listening.”
