In essence, the car uses Hydrogen to generate electricity – creating only water as a by- product. This virtually zero emission car is not the portrait of luxury per-se, but its sleek futuristic design and its impressive promise of a clean environment is certainly worth a second look. With a 151 horsepower fuel-cell engine, the ToyotaMirai goes from0 to 100 in nine seconds with a driving range of around 400km per charge. Arguably, the Mirai is not as practical as a sedan as it seats only four – Toyota preferring to avoid the weight of a fifth passenger due to the very large hydrogen tanks in the back of the vehicle – but the three years’ worth of free fuel the company throws in upon purchase more than makes amends! Although the Mirai is certainly a breakthrough, being the first hydrogen-fuelled car available for sale, it faces a number of challenges – namely competition fromother, better established energy sources. The current lack of hydrogen refuelling stations is obviouslyamajor concern and although countries like Japanhave pledged their support for the technology, there is still a long way to go before driving a Mirai becomes a realistic ambition. Yetdespite this, there isplentyto loveabouttheMirai.
