High Life Issue #5

M iguel de Senna Fernandes is a successful lawyer. His father and grandfather were too. Their love and respect for the law, however, is not the only aspect that defines this family. Literary talent has also blessed the last two generations who have left a mark in local culture. It is while speaking about his father – the famous Macau novelist Henrique de Senna Fernandes – that Miguel, sitting at his desk, starts talking about his journey into the world of Patuá, Macau’s own dialect, which is a mixture of Portuguese, Cantonese and Malay spoken by the old Macanese families. “I had nothing to do with Doci Papiaçam de Macau,” he explains. “My father belonged to the group. When Adé dos Santos Ferreira, the manwho wrote and interpreted the plays passed away, the group wanted my father to write a script.” With a glint in his eye Miguel, as he likes to be called, explains how he and his father had long discussions about the play. Henrique had insisted he knew nothing about writing scripts.
