High Life Issue #5

“Infact, because I talkedsomuchaboutitandwasconstantly pitching ideas, he said to me, ‘Why don't youwrite it?’” The rest is history. Miguel started to lead the group and soon the amateur companywas selling out venues every year. Despite such success, Miguel remains warmand friendly. “I used to be very shy,” he admits to our surprise. “Studying law in Portugal was very hard because we had oral exams and I used to shake during the whole thing! Actually, the theater helped a lot.” When asked the secret to his success, he has little doubt it is all down to, “a good and fun environment. We need to be able to laugh and enjoy each other's company. Laughter has been an element since the beginning of Doci. Actually, the dialect itself, Patuá, is a funny language unto itself.” But Miguel did more than organizing, writing and producing plays in the old language of Macau. He brought an entire new generation of youngsters to the theater. A once dying language is now attracting a lot more attention. He smiles at this.
