For Takashi Murakami, art cannot be defined by labels or schools, it should be free of elitisms and genres. Art should be appreciated in each of the items seen and held by the viewer, in its context alone. He believes the postmodern Japanese visual arts, with movements like manga and anime, draw back to these two-dimensional traditional paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries. If there is one thing that can be said for Superflat it’s that it has achieved its mission. After just a few minutes, any preconceptions viewers might have about art are challenged, questioned and often overthrown.
