HIGH LIFE #8 May 2017 33 “As I get older, I feel more in touch with my Chinese side. Coming to Macau was a way of learning more about my culture,” he says. Dr Shee Vá is also an audiophile and in his private time gives seminars about opera at the Rui Cunha Foundation. But he wants to tell me about his latest endeavor, one related both to his trade and another of his passions: food. “The Association of Portuguese Speaking Doctors, together with The Association of Nutritionists, organized a two day event, dedicated to one of the fastest growing health problems in the world and in Asia – nonalcoholic fatty liver disease,” he says, proceeding to explain that the disease is marked by liver inflammation, which may progress to scarring and irreversible damage. This damage is similar to the damage caused by heavy alcohol use. At its most severe, it can progress to cirrhosis and liver failure. It is a serious issue he feels needs to be addressed.
