But while the element of interior design has been embraced in the West for many years, Macau’s interior design industry has only begun to gain traction over the past decade. Clement Cheng, who completed his professional study in the UK before returning to Macau to become an interior designer in 2009, recalls how difficult it was during those early days. “It was very hard at the beginning,” he says. “The whole mentality of the societywas completely different and cultural differences were huge (between the UK and Macau). When I worked on interior design at that time, the question I was often asked was, ‘Why do you charge for it?’ “I also noticed that many clients would only come to us after construction had been done. They would also ask me for a budget. To us, design should always come first. “We cannot offer the budget before we get of all our preparation done – namely detailed consultations and all the relevant meetings – and these should be part of the project from the beginning. But back in 2009, it was difficult for people to understand this.” 一 栋美观的建筑物的兴建，有赖于建筑师、工程师及室 内设计师等从项目一开始便携手通力合作。尽管室内 设计已经在西方成熟发展了多年，在澳门却只在近十多年方兴 未艾。2009年，从英国学成回澳并继续从事室内设计的郑腾 晋，对于早年间返澳创业的艰辛至今仍记忆犹新。 “刚回来做室内设计时很辛苦，整个社会心态完全不同， （英国和澳门）文化差异很大。当时我做室内设计，被人问到 最多的是，为什么你要收钱？ “我还发现，很多客户都是在工程完成之后才来找我们画 室内设计图，然后要求我们提供报价。但对于业内人士而言， 设计与工程之间的关系，应该是设计先行。 “前期要做咨询，中期要开会，然后才能出来整个设计， 要完成这个流程客户才知道自己需要的是什么，我们才能以此 开出报价。但在我2009年回来时，发现大家都无法理解这件 事。” 彼时的郑腾晋已在英国从事室内设计数年，拥有专业学 位，甚至收到了伦敦一间公司的加入邀请。出于对家庭的考 虑，郑腾晋决定返回澳门，但他坚持不愿放弃这一行，并于 2010年创办了「桥空间设计」。
